Still on the pill after years? You are not alone.

A lot of women stay on the pill long past when it suits them, not because it is working perfectly, but because switching feels complicated. The IUD can feel like a big unknown, and that uncertainty keeps people from making a change that could genuinely improve their day-to-day life.

That is completely understandable. And it is exactly why seeing a specialist gynaecologist matters. Dr Preeti Khillan sees women for Mirena IUD insertion at Western Specialist Centre, and her approach is always clear, calm, and patient-centred. Your questions matter. Nothing happens until you are comfortable and informed.

The most common thing women say after their IUD insertion is that it was easier than they expected. With Dr Preeti, you will know exactly what is coming before it does.

The Mirena IUD may be a good fit if…

You want to stop thinking about contraception daily

No pill to remember, no prescription to refill. Once it is in, it works quietly in the background for up to five years.

You have heavy or painful periods

Many women find the Mirena significantly reduces period pain and bleeding. For some, periods stop altogether.

You want to keep your future options open

The Mirena is fully reversible. It can be removed at any time and fertility returns promptly after removal.

The Mirena IUD is not suitable for everyone. Dr Preeti will assess your individual situation and discuss all available options at your appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a GP referral to book?

+

No. You can book directly with Dr Preeti Khillan at Western Specialist Centre without a GP referral. Please note that without a Medicare referral, appointments are not eligible for a Medicare rebate. Our team can discuss fees when you enquire.

Does the insertion hurt?

+

Most women experience some discomfort during insertion, commonly described as cramping similar to period pain. The insertion itself takes only a few minutes. Dr Preeti will talk you through every step and you will be informed and in control throughout. Most women find the experience more manageable than they anticipated.

How long does the appointment take?

+

The full appointment, including consultation and insertion, typically takes around 20 to 30 minutes. The insertion itself takes approximately 5 minutes. You are welcome to take time at the start to ask questions before anything happens.

When can I have an IUD inserted?

+

IUD insertion can be performed at different points in the menstrual cycle. Dr Preeti will advise on the ideal timing for your situation when you book. In some cases, insertion during or just after a period may be preferred as the cervix is slightly more open at that time.

How quickly can I resume normal activity?

+

Most women return to normal day-to-day activities the same day. Some women experience cramping or spotting for a day or two after insertion, which is normal. Dr Preeti will provide aftercare instructions at your appointment.

Which locations offer IUD insertion?

+

Dr Preeti Khillan sees patients for IUD and Mirena insertion at our St Albans, Werribee, and Craigieburn clinics. Our team will confirm appointment availability at your preferred location when you enquire.
