A Brief Guide To Understanding Common Child Behavioural Disorders
Behavioural disorders amongst children are quite common nowadays. Child behavioural disorders are patterns of behaviour present in children which hinder the day-to-day activities. Though most children may show some unexpected behaviours at some point, it becomes a problem when these behaviours last for a longer time. These disorders also affect the emotional well-being of the child. Many a times certain situations at home or school can also affect the child’s behaviour. You can notice changes in the behaviour with the way your child reacts to a certain situation or behaves. Here are some common child behavioural disorders.
ADHD
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is the most common behavioural disorder amongst children. When a child is affected by this disorder he/she is unable to pay proper attention and is extremely impulsive. The child suffering from ADHD is most of the times hyperactive and shows signs of restlessness. Though this problem occurs in childhood, it can continue even after the child grows and enters into adulthood. In most cases, the problem with being restless gets controlled but the issue with being inattentive stays. There is no specific cure for ADHD but this condition can be tackled with a blend of medication and therapy.
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
Several children who suffer from ADHD also show signs of ODD. In Oppositional Defiant Disorder, the child may show frequent behaviours of aggression and disobedience. The affected children may also do certain things to purposely irritate others. Signs of ODD may include outbursts of aggression, arguments, irritable mood, etc. In order to deal with Oppositional Defiant Disorder, one can go for medication and psychotherapy. Moreover, proper parenting skills are also needed to control the symptoms.
Conduct disorder
Conduct disorder is both a behavioural disorder and an emotional one. In this particular disorder, the child may show aggressive behaviour and may also do things like shoplifting, lying, bullying, being rude to others, etc. In several cases, children suffering from conduct disorder may not go by the norms and do things like running away from school, etc. Most of the times psychotherapy and medication is used to treat conduct disorder.
Parents and teachers both need to work together to improve the child’s condition if he/she is suffering from any of the behavioural disorders.
